Founder's Pick · April 2026: My Father Le Bijou 1922

By Peter Roth ·

Every month I pick one cigar from MDC’s current rotation and tell you - plainly - who should be stocking it, where it lands on a menu, and why it earned the spot this month over everything else on the floor.

This is the April 2026 pick.

The Pick: My Father Le Bijou 1922 - Box-Pressed Torpedo

If I could only stock one cigar behind a high-end bar for the next 90 days, it would be this one. Not because it’s the rarest thing in my humidor - it isn’t - but because it’s the most reliable upgrade cigar I carry. It’s the one that takes a casual bar guest who ordered a Macanudo three times and converts them into the person who now orders Le Bijou every visit and brings a friend.

Wrapper: Nicaraguan Habano Oscuro Pelo de Oro Binder + Filler: All Nicaraguan, aged Habano Size in focus: Torpedo Box-Pressed, 6 × 52 Ratings: Cigar Aficionado #1 Cigar of 2015 (still the benchmark). Consistently 92–94 on re-releases. Retail range you should run: $16–$22 stick · $220–$260 box of 23 (sometimes 20)

Why it’s April’s pick, specifically

Three reasons this cigar earns its slot right now:

  1. Shoulder-season inventory math. April through early June is when hospitality buyers are rebalancing their summer humidors - golf courses reopening patios, hotels prepping their event calendars, casinos transitioning from winter high-roller rotation to convention-season mix. Le Bijou has the category placement to survive that transition because it reads luxury to a business-dinner guest and authenticity to a cigar person.

  2. It’s the cleanest “upgrade story” on a menu. Put a Macanudo next to a Le Bijou on the same printed menu with a $6 spread, and you’ll watch the average ticket move. The cigar sells itself through the label - guests have seen the Cigar Aficionado #1 blurb. You don’t have to train a server on it.

  3. Allocation is relatively stable right now. Le Bijou isn’t under the kind of allocation pressure that, say, Liga Privada or Padrón is. My Father keeps the Torpedo Box-Pressed in circulation without the gray-market headaches. You can actually build a program around it and not watch stock evaporate.

Where it belongs

  • Hotel cigar bars and resort lounges - reads premium to guests who don’t know the category, rewards guests who do
  • Upscale steakhouses with humidors - perfect on-menu next to Macanudo/Romeo as the $16 upgrade tier
  • Casino high-limit rooms - box-pressed torpedo has the right visual weight behind glass
  • Golf clubs with clubhouse cigar service - holds up in outdoor humidity better than lighter wrappers
  • Independent retail - an easy win; this is a guaranteed repeat-customer blend

Where it doesn’t

I don’t push this one into stores that don’t already have a functioning premium cigar program. If you’re converting a convenience counter into a humidor, this isn’t the starter SKU - you want Macanudo Gold or a Perdomo Habano on that shelf first, Le Bijou six months later once your regular buyers are conditioned to spend.

The move for April

If you’re already an MDC account and Le Bijou isn’t on your current rotation, call your rep this week. Price point holds through the end of Q2. If you’re not an MDC account yet - apply for an MDC account and we’ll put a sample pair on your next delivery so you can taste it before you commit to a box.

One cigar, one month, one pick. That’s the whole format.
