The cigar concierge for luxury hotels and resort properties.

Luxury hotel cigar service is a margin pocket hiding in plain sight - guests who will spend on a curated cigar but won't settle for a gas-station selection. MDC is the cigar concierge for the Four Seasons, the Broadmoor, the Brown Palace, and dozens of independent resort properties across the country - concierge-level attention to the program, not a catalog dropped on your bar.

Why hotel cigar programs are different

Hotel guests arrive with different expectations than retail buyers. They're often on a business trip or a milestone vacation, the cigar is part of a bigger experience (the bourbon-after-dinner, the poolside afternoon, the cigar-and-scotch event), and the purchase isn't price-sensitive - it's experience-sensitive. The guest will pay $24 for the right cigar in the right setting, and walk out of the lobby shop if the selection reads cheap.

That's the distributor problem a luxury hotel needs solved: the humidor must read premium to someone who doesn't know cigars - and authentic to someone who does - and it has to do it with limited shelf space and without a full-time cigar sommelier on staff. MDC has spent fourteen years building exactly this kind of program, and we've refined the approach across resort, urban business hotel, destination lodge, and members-club formats.

The three hotel cigar service models we build for

1. In-room humidor + bar service

The most common hotel setup: a branded humidor in the lobby bar, cigar-service cart or tray in the bar's back-of-house, and a menu card at the bar. Service is bar-led and the sommelier's knowledge is minimal - the menu and service script carry the experience. This model optimizes for 12–20 SKUs across three price tiers, all high-recognition brands (Macanudo, Romeo y Julieta, Arturo Fuente, Padrón, Ashton, Oliva Serie V, Rocky Patel).

2. Dedicated cigar lounge or smoking terrace

Resort properties with a purpose-built cigar lounge or outdoor smoking terrace (the Broadmoor model, the Four Seasons Georgetown model). Depth-heavy inventory, 30–50 SKUs, trained cigar staff at the venue, and a curated rotation that includes boutique and limited releases. This is where MDC's allocation relationships and staff-training program earn their keep.

3. Event/catering cigar service

Weddings, corporate events, whisky tastings, cigar-and-bourbon pairings. MDC supplies the inventory, provides the service cart, and in some cases provides a trained sommelier for the event. Inventory turnover is event-driven rather than steady-state, and we structure delivery and billing accordingly.

The Complete Hotel Program

What a hotel cigar account with MDC includes

Curated hotel humidor

12–50 SKUs picked for your guest demographic, property style, and service model. Not a catalog - a program.

Branded humidor + menu design

Commercial humidor installation (free with qualifying accounts), menu design, cigar- service tray or cart, and menu reprints as the rotation shifts.

On-site staff training

For national hotel clients we come on-site. Cigar cut, light, recommendation script, pairing with spirits on your beverage menu, and a bar quick-reference card.

No-risk exchange

Anything that doesn't move comes back. See how it works. Critical in hotels where tourism seasonality causes uneven SKU rotation.

Humidor calibration

Humidification monitoring guidance, beetle prevention protocols, and a rotation schedule that keeps every box within spec. Crucial in high-altitude resort properties.

Event-ready supplemental stock

Weddings, whisky nights, corporate retreats. We pre-plan supplemental supply around your calendar so you never run out during a signature event.

Hotel opening inventory sizing

From the opening inventory framework:

  • Urban boutique hotel with bar cigar service: 400–800 cigars across 12–18 SKUs. Focused on the top-tier recognition brands and one or two upgrade picks.
  • Full-service business hotel with lobby bar program: 800–1,500 cigars across 18–25 SKUs. Broader tier coverage plus dedicated humidor display.
  • Destination resort with lounge or terrace: 1,500–3,500 cigars across 30–50 SKUs. Full three-tier structure plus depth on the brands your highest-spend guests request.
  • Flagship resort (Broadmoor-grade): 3,500+ cigars, 50+ SKUs, multiple service points across the property.

Your MDC rep will build a proposal specific to your property's profile - guest demographic, bar traffic, existing spirits program, and the cigar-service model you want to run - within 2–3 business days of a discovery call.

The hotel cigar margin math

Hotels running a proper cigar program typically see 2.5–3.5× retail markup on the mid-tier and 3.5–4.5× on the upper tier. A $12 wholesale cigar serves at $30–$40, a $20 wholesale serves at $55–$75. Factor in the experience premium (cut and light service, paired pour, outdoor terrace access) and a single cigar can carry a $60–$90 bar ticket. Cigar service doesn't compete with F&B margin; it is F&B margin, hidden in a category most hotel GMs ignore.

For the broader hospitality category, see Cigars for Hospitality. For the adjacent casino category - high-limit rooms, resort-casino integrated properties - see Wholesale Cigars for Casinos. For individual major hotel markets: Las Vegas, Orlando, Aspen, and Denver.

Book a 15-minute program call. We'll look at your property, your guest demographic, your existing bar program, and the cigar-service model you want to run. You'll walk away with a clear read on what a real hotel cigar program should contribute to your lobby-bar F&B P&L - whether MDC ends up being your distributor or not.

Cost of Waiting

A full-service hotel with a lobby bar running a catalog-driven humidor typically leaves $25K-$80K/year on the table vs. a curated, experience-calibrated program. Event and wedding supplementals compound the gap.
