Prensado
The flagship. Honduran Corojo wrapper, box-pressed, made at Raíces Cubanas. 2011 Cigar of the Year - the award still sells it a decade on.
Alan Rubin founded Alec Bradley in 1996 and named it after his two sons, Alec and Bradley. The company built its reputation on Honduran and Nicaraguan production - and cemented it in 2011 when the Prensado Churchill took Cigar Aficionado's Cigar of the Year. MDC distributes the core Alec Bradley catalog to hospitality and retail partners, with depth on Prensado, Black Market, Tempus, and Magic Toast.
Alec Bradley earns its slot in the MDC rotation the same way every brand does: it sells through. The Prensado - a Honduran-wrapped blend from the Raíces Cubanas factory in Danlí - is the rare cigar that carries a Cigar of the Year title (2011) at a mid-tier wholesale cost, which makes it one of the easiest premium hand-sells in the category. Customers who don't know the brand know the award, and the award closes the sale.
Alan Rubin came to tobacco from the hardware business, launched Alec Bradley in 1996, and named the company after his sons - both of whom now work in the business. The portfolio he built is unusually well-structured for retail: Prensado anchors the top, Tempus and Magic Toast fill the full-bodied middle, Black Market covers the value-premium tier with real shelf presence, and American Classic and Project 40 give you honest entry price points without embarrassing the rest of the humidor. In 2024 the brand was acquired by Scandinavian Tobacco Group, which stabilized production and distribution without changing the blends the market already buys.
For most MDC accounts, Alec Bradley slots into the middle of the humidor - the tier where volume actually lives. A typical program runs 2-4 SKUs: a Prensado vitola as the ratings-backed anchor, Black Market as the fast mover, and Tempus or Magic Toast rotating by clientele. Your MDC rep sizes it inside the broader proposal based on your venue.
“Alec Bradley is in our standing rotation because the accounts we serve - from casinos to cigar bars - sell through it consistently. That's the only reason a brand stays on our line card.”
Not every SKU in the Alec Bradley catalog is in our standing rotation - we curate to what actually moves at retail. These are the core lines we keep in depth.
The flagship. Honduran Corojo wrapper, box-pressed, made at Raíces Cubanas. 2011 Cigar of the Year - the award still sells it a decade on.
Nicaraguan-Panamanian filler under a Nicaraguan Jalapa wrapper. Distinctive matte-black band, strong shelf presence, value-premium price point.
Honduran puro built on Trojes-grown tobaccos. Full-bodied, earthy profile - the steakhouse and bourbon-bar pick in the portfolio.
Honduran and Nicaraguan blend celebrating a standout farm harvest. Medium-full, toasty-sweet profile with broad hospitality appeal.
Connecticut-shade-wrapped mild blend at an entry price. The approachable golf-course and daytime-service SKU.
The value line. Nicaraguan blend engineered for consistency at a low wholesale cost - a workhorse for high-volume and starter humidors.
Alec Bradley is one of the more versatile brands MDC distributes because the portfolio spans the full price curve. Casinos and steakhouses lean on Prensado - the Cigar of the Year framing does the selling in a display humidor, and the box-pressed format reads premium in the hand. Tempus is the natural second slot in those venues for guests who want a fuller Honduran profile with their pour.
Hotels and golf clubs get the most out of the middle and entry tiers: Magic Toast as a crowd-pleasing medium-full option, American Classic for daytime and terrace service where a mild Connecticut is the right call. Black Market and Project 40 are the retail workhorses - liquor stores and pro shops move them on price point and shelf presence without needing a staff member to explain the blend. Cigar bars typically run three or four lines deep.
Alec Bradley's margin story is the ratings-to-cost ratio. Core catalog wholesale-to-retail runs 2.0-2.5×. A Prensado at $8-$9 wholesale retails at $17-$22 on the shelf and serves at $22-$28 in hospitality - Cigar of the Year pedigree at a wholesale cost well under the other award-title brands. Black Market at $5-$6 wholesale retails at $11-$14, and Project 40 at $3-$4 wholesale hits the $7-$9 retail tier that keeps starter humidors and high-volume accounts moving.
The practical effect: Alec Bradley lets a venue offer an award-winning premium anchor and a defensible entry price point from a single brand family, which simplifies reordering and keeps the humidor coherent without stretching the budget.
The MDC approach to any brand is the same: start with a curated core rotation sized to your venue, prove sell-through, then layer in deeper SKU coverage as the account matures. For a typical hospitality account, a Alec Bradley program begins with 2–3 vitolas across 40–60 cigars of opening depth, paired with the other brands that complement your overall humidor structure.
Because Alec Bradley is one of the core workhorse brands in the category, it's almost always part of the MDC opening-proposal for any new account - the exact SKUs and depth vary by whether you're running a bar-led hospitality program, a dedicated cigar lounge, or a pro-shop display. Your rep builds the proposal fast once you apply, with real numbers keyed to your venue.
